Day 45: Pfingstenrose and Pentecost

“When you strip it of everything else, Pentecost stands for power and life. That’s what came into the church when the Holy Spirit came down on the day of Pentecost.” ―David Wilkerson

Project 365: #45

One of the most amazing things about nature is that it always seems to have perfect timing. Every year the dates of the religious calender change, yet nature seems to match the dates perfectly! Today is Pentecost, Pfingsten in German. And, my Pfingstenrose (peonies) have been waiting to open, just for today! It cannot be truer that Pentecost stands for power and life!

“The dove descending breaks the air
With flame of incandescent terror
Of which the tongues declare
The one discharge from sin and error.
The only hope, or else despair
Lies in the choice of pyre or pyre-
To be redeemed from fire by fire.

Who then devised the torment? Love.
Love is the unfamiliar Name
Behind the hands that wove
The intolerable shirt of flame
Which human power cannot remove.
We only live, only suspire
Consumed by either fire or fire.”
T.S. Eliot, Four Quartets
