"We look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression--everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way--everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want--which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants--everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear--which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor--anywhere in the world." - Franklin Roosevelt
"For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others" - Nelson Mandela
Project 365: #86
Celebrating our first Independence Day in the US, and the 239th Anniversary of Independence here! Our new soon-to-be home-town, Mendham NJ, with flag-lined streets. Independence is significant for many reasons - one is primarily freedom, in its many different forms. Freedom of speech and expression, freedom to worship God, economic freedom, and freedom from fear. Everyone has a right to freedom, but it does not mean that one can simply do anything, it comes with a responsibility. For temporary residents in a new country it is our responsibility to ensure that we live in a way to respect and enhance the freedom of others. It is fitting that we celebrate independence and freedom considering our history, and important to remember not repeat the mistakes made in the past, so all can enjoy freedom going forward.
